Permit to Carry FAQ

Common questions about Minnesota permit-to-carry classes, gear, and what to expect at Dante's Gun Class. Can't find your answer? Email chris@dantegunclass.com.

How much does a Minnesota permit-to-carry class cost?

The Permit to Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals class is $95 plus a $20 range fee. That covers the certified curriculum, live-fire qualification, and your certificate of completion for the sheriff's office. Intro to Pistol is $50, and private lessons are $150.

Do I need shooting experience to take a class?

No. Intro to Pistol is built for first-time shooters and covers safe handling, stance, grip, and trigger control before any live fire. The Permit to Carry class assumes you can safely handle a handgun at the range, so if you're brand new, start with Intro to Pistol or book a private lesson first.

How do I get my permit after the class?

After you complete the class you receive a certificate of training. You apply for your Minnesota Permit to Carry at the sheriff's office in the county where you live, submitting the application, your certificate, a government-issued photo ID, fingerprints where required, and the county application fee (up to $100 for a new permit). The sheriff has up to 30 days to approve or deny, and the permit is valid for five years.

How old do I have to be?

Minnesota requires you to be at least 21 years old to apply for a Permit to Carry. For other classes such as Intro to Pistol, contact Chris to discuss age requirements and supervision.

Where are classes held?

Classes are held at the North Metro Regional Public Safety Training Facility. Upcoming session dates are listed on the Schedule page, and each session runs 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

How many students are in a class?

Each session is capped at 10 students. Small classes mean more individual coaching and more range time per shooter, so spots fill fast — it's best to enroll early.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons are $150 and are scheduled by appointment to fit your goals — fundamentals, home defense, or pre-class prep. Email chris@dantegunclass.com to set up a time, or use the contact form.

What should I bring to class?

Bring a government-issued photo ID and dress for range time — closed-toe shoes and a shirt that closes at the collar. If you have questions about firearms, ammunition, or gear, Chris will confirm everything you need when you register.

What if my permit is expiring?

Minnesota permits are valid for five years. Taking a refresher permit-to-carry class before your renewal is a smart move, and the renewal application fee at the sheriff's office is up to $75. Check the Schedule page for upcoming sessions or email Chris.
