What to Expect in Your First Minnesota Permit to Carry Class

What to Expect in Your First Minnesota Permit to Carry Class

Signing up for your first permit class can feel like a big step — especially if you have never handled a firearm before. Here is an honest walkthrough of exactly what happens in our Permit to Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals class, so you can walk in knowing there are no surprises.

The Basics: Time, Cost, and Location

  • Length: One four-hour session, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
  • Cost: $95 plus a $20 range fee
  • Location: Our North Metro training facility in the Twin Cities metro
  • Class size: Capped at 10 students
  • Outcome: Minnesota Permit to Carry certification

What We Cover

The class is built around three goals: keep you safe, make you knowledgeable, and qualify you for your permit application.

  1. Safe handling and storage. The fundamentals of safe firearm handling at home and on the range, with special attention for households with children.
  2. Minnesota carry law, in plain language. Where you can and cannot carry, how interactions with law enforcement work, and what the law expects of permit holders. No legal jargon — just clear answers.
  3. Home defense fundamentals. Practical, responsible planning for protecting your home and family.
  4. The permit process. Exactly how to apply through your county sheriff's office once you leave with your certificate.

Beginners are welcome and expected. Questions are encouraged — the small class size exists precisely so you can ask them.

What to Bring

Bring a government-issued photo ID and wear comfortable clothing. Everything else is provided. The $20 range fee is paid at the range, separate from the $95 class fee. If you have your own firearm you are welcome to bring it; if you do not, we will walk you through the range portion with provided equipment.

After Class: Getting Your Permit

When you complete the class, you receive your training certificate — the documentation Minnesota requires before you apply. You then submit your application to your county sheriff's office along with the state application fee. Most students find this part simple once they know exactly which forms to bring, and we cover it step by step before you leave.

Common Questions From First-Timers

"Will I be the least experienced person there?" Possibly — and it will not matter. A large share of our students have never touched a firearm before class day.

"Do I need to own a gun first?" No. Many students take the class before buying anything.

"Is the class intimidating?" Our students consistently describe it as calm, patient, and practical. Chris is an NRA-certified instructor who specializes in first-time students.

"Why the class size limit?" Ten students means everyone gets their questions answered and nobody is rushed.
